Why Sports Films?

Sports films are one of Hollywood’s most enduring and bankable themes. Three Sports films have been honored with Best Picture Oscars: Rocky, Chariots of Fire, and Million Dollar Baby. Even in recent years, films like Ferrari, Air, Boys in the Boat, & The Iron Claw have been beloved by audiences. Sports films work because of their ability to motivate, inspire, and capture the human spirit. The Eagles still play a scene from Rocky at Lincoln Financial Field immediately before kickoff. Even though the film is more than 40 years old, it still gives us goosebumps.

The Concept of Sports Movies Night

The essence of Sports Movies Night is simple yet brilliant – a night dedicated to iconic sports films, and the amazing stories behind them.

The idea started while Ray Didinger and Glen Macnow were doing their longtime WIP radio show. They found that anytime they mentioned sports movies, the radio lines lit up. Listeners loved the topic. First, Glen came up with the idea of doing a book. Together Ray and Glen authored The Ultimate Book of Sports Movies in 2009. Gene Hackman even wrote the foreword for it. The Philadelphia Daily News said, “If you love sports and films, this is an irresistible and superbly crafted read.” Eventually, that book’s success led to this live show.

As you watch famous scenes from legendary sports movies like Rocky, Hoosiers, Caddyshack, and more, Ray and Glen uncover each film’s behind-the-scenes stories and other things that made the movie successful. For example, did you know Jack Nicholson, not Gene Hackman, was supposed to be the coach in Hoosiers?

The event has been a massive success, with sold-out shows at the Bryn Mawr Film Institute and the Swarthmore Players Club. Instead of hunting for tickets, you can book Sports Movies Night directly through the Mollie Plotkin Group. Typically, the complete show runs for about two hours.

An Energetic Atmosphere

One of the standout features of Sports Movies Night is the electric atmosphere that permeates the venue every time. Attendees, adorned in their favorite jerseys or memorabilia, create a collective energy that mirrors the excitement of a live game. Whether it’s the cheers, laughter, or heated discussions about memorable plays, the event captures the camaraderie inherent in sports fandom. This is especially true when the event is opened up to a Q&A and the entire depth of the crowd’s passion is on display, both individually and collectively.

The show consists of seven or eight clips from various sports films, iconic scenes like the final round of Rocky 1, the climactic homer of The Natural, or the father & son catch in Field of Dreams, will be shown.

The selection of films for Sports Movies Night is crucial to the event’s success. Typically, Didinger and Macnow carefully curate a lineup that spans various sports, eras, and genres, creating a diverse and captivating program that caters to a wide audience. Each film is a piece of the larger puzzle that makes Sports Movies Night an unforgettable experience. However, when you book Sports Movies Night as a private event, the lineup can be catered specifically to your interests.
