Biography

Engineering a Career in Speed

From dreaming of space to redefining Formula 1 strategy, Ruth Buscombe’s journey began with a love of math and a fascination with problem-solving. A first-class honors graduate in Aerospace and Aerothermal Engineering from the University of Cambridge, Ruth’s master’s thesis on the Drag Reduction System (DRS)—developed in conjunction with the FIA—laid the foundation for a groundbreaking career in motorsport.

The Ferrari Years

Ruth began her F1 career at the iconic Scuderia Ferrari in 2012, first as a Simulations Engineer and then as a Race Strategist. From Maranello’s remote strategy room, she managed on-track decisions for world champions including Kimi Räikkönen, Fernando Alonso, and Sebastian Vettel. Her race-winning strategy at the 2015 Malaysian Grand Prix helped Vettel earn his first victory with Ferrari—a landmark moment for both driver and team.

Team Leader & Tactical Visionary

In 2015, Ruth joined Haas F1 as their first trackside strategy engineer, helping the American team make an extraordinary debut with back-to-back points finishes. She later moved to Sauber (now Stake F1), where she served as Head of Race Strategy from 2016 to 2023. Her leadership was instrumental in elevating the team’s performance, most notably in 2022 when Sauber secured their highest Constructors’ Championship position in a decade.

Throughout her time at Sauber, Ruth also worked with young talents, including current Ferrari driver Charles Leclerc, guiding them through their first seasons in the sport with data-backed decision-making and calm under pressure.

From Strategy Room to Studio

Today, Ruth Buscombe serves as an F1 analyst and commentator for Formula 1 and F1 TV. She brings her insider knowledge to fans around the world—breaking down complex strategy calls, pit stop gambles, and tire decisions that shape every race. She also speaks regularly at corporate engagements and conferences, translating the high-performance world of racing into insights on leadership, risk management, and innovation.

Driving Change in STEM

As one of the few women to lead strategy in Formula 1, Ruth has long championed inclusion in motorsport. She’s been an ambassador for Susie Wolff’s Dare to be Different and now FIA Girls on Track initiatives since 2016 and continues to speak on the importance of supporting women in engineering and STEM fields.

With humor, clarity, and unmatched expertise, Ruth Buscombe offers audiences a unique window into what it takes to win—in racing, in engineering, and in the moments that matter most.

Key Audience Takeaways

The Future is Fast: Formula One’s Blueprint for Data Excellence

More than any other sport, Formula One has embraced a data-driven business culture, particularly with its near obsession with marginal gains and continuous improvement. F1 teams use data to enable drivers, engineers, and HQ staff to determine precisely how the car and driver are behaving, diagnose issues, resolve problems, and speed up decision-making.

F1 teams employ a plethora of analytical strategies and advanced communication systems to gain a competitive advantage. The use of simulators has transformed driver training, enabling systems to be learned, tested, and developed in a virtual environment prior to real-world deployment. With the advent of additive manufacturing, machine learning, AI, and GenAI across F1, the sport’s use of technology to innovate and transform all aspects of its operations is set to accelerate further.

Cybersecurity at Speed: Protecting Data, Performance, and Reputation

Cybersecurity is a huge topic in Formula 1. There is endless information flowing seamlessly around the globe, linking cars, teams, and factories, making tech security essential.

Each car is equipped with hundreds of sensors, generating massive amounts of data during races and tests. This data, crucial for real-time decision-making and post-race strategy adjustments, makes teams prime targets for various cyber threats, including espionage, data theft, and sabotage. Cybersecurity measures protect intellectual property, ensure operational continuity, and safeguard team communications, but how does the world’s fastest industry approach its security?

Safety Without Stagnation: Risk Management for Success

Safety is a first-order priority in Formula One, and the last 30 years have seen a profound change in how the sport manages risk. Between 1950 and 1994, there were over 40 driver fatalities at races. Since then, there has only been one.

This has been made possible by creating clear priorities regarding safety. Compliance is non-negotiable. Safety is not an area of competitive advantage. Safety systems, processes, and technologies are shared so that F1 doesn’t have islands of excellence in oceans of mediocrity.

However, the risk-averse teams never win in F1 – the teams that embrace and manage risk are more likely to try new things, innovate in ways both small and large, and ultimately drive competitive advantage. It’s the difference between participating and competing. Managing safety, risk, and fear of failure is the key to promoting creativity, innovation, and success in a controlled way.
