Biography

Vietnam War

After winning the 1966 NCAA Championship with the Notre Dame Fighting Irish, the Pittsburgh Steelers drafted Rocky Bleier in the 16th round of the 1968 NFL Draft. However, before he even reached the field Rocky was also drafted by the US Army to fight in Vietnam. During the war, Rocky sustained very serious injuries to his leg from an enemy grenade. He was awarded a Purple Heart and Bronze Star but left wondering if his football career was over before it even started. When he returned home, Rocky could not even walk without being in pain, let alone play running back in the NFL. Doctors told him his dreams of the NFL were dead. But giving up was not in Rocky’s plans.

NFL Comeback

For two years, Rocky went through intense training to overcome his injuries and return to the league. In 1972 he returned to the Steelers’ active roster and in 1974 he earned a starting role in the offense. In the following years, Rocky was a part of one of the greatest teams of all time. From 1974 to 1979, the Pittsburgh Steelers won four Super Bowls (IX, X, XIII, XIV) becoming the only team in NFL history to win four Super Bowls in six years. After the 1980 season, Rocky retired from the NFL as the Steelers’ 4th all-time leading rusher.
