Dick Vermeil began his career coaching high school and college football teams in his home state of California throughout the 1960s. Then, the Los Angeles Rams hired Vermeil as one of the NFL’s first special teams coaches. However, in 1974 he returned to college football as the head coach of the UCLA Bruins, leading them to their first conference championship in 10 years and a Rose Bowl win. Vermeil would be honored as a Rose Bowl Hall of Fame member in 2014.
Amid a severe drought for the Philadelphia Eagles, Dick Vermeil became their head coach in 1976. Here, Vermeil began to build his reputation for resurrecting NFL teams. In 1978, the Philadelphia Eagles made the playoffs for the first time in 18 seasons. The next season, the Eagles won their first playoff game since 1960. Then in 1980, Dick Vermeil would take the Eagles all the way to Super Bowl XV. Following two more seasons and the player’s strike, Dick Vermeil retired for the first time.
Throughout his time for the Eagles, Dick Vermeil coached many of its most legendary players through their greatest victories. He oversaw the 1978 season with the breakout performances of NFL stars Ron Jaworski and Wilbert Montogomery. The same year, he was head coach during the Miracle at the Meadowlands, widely regarded as one of the greatest games in Eagles history.
Disney’s 2006 movie Invincible features Vermeil’s Eagles during the rise of Vince Papale as the oldest rookie non-kicker in the history of the NFL. At the time, Vermeil invited Papale to a workout after seeing footage of him playing semi-pro ball in Philadelphia.
During his retirement, Dick Vermeil served as a sports announcer for CBS and ABC. However, he would return to coaching in 1997 with the St. Louis Rams. Dick Vermeil led the Rams to their first Super Bowl win. This was due in part to his choice to start Kurt Warner as their quarterback, who was unknown at the time but proved to be a powerhouse. For his Super Bowl win, Dick Vermeil once again earned the honor of NFL Coach of the Year for the 1999 season.
Dick Vermeil returned to the NFL and signed with the Kansas City Chiefs in 2001. Over the next four years, Vermeil coached the NFL’s top-ranked offense which included Priest Holms, Willie Roaf, and Will Shields.
Dick Vermeil has left behind a legacy as an emotional, passionate, and effective coach. He has since been an active supporter of the Boy Scouts of America and is the spokesperson for large-scale charity events. Organizations now hire Dick Vermeil for guest appearances and motivational speeches.
