Los Angeles Rams

After turning down a Major League Baseball offer from the St. Louis Cardinals, Ron Jaworski set several school records at Youngstown State University. His football prowess led the Los Angeles Rams to select him in the second round of the 1973 NFL Draft.

Although he didn’t get a chance to start until his second season, Ron made the most of it. He led the Rams to three straight wins, including a Divisional playoff win against football’s St. Louis Cardinals. Unfortunately, his winning streak ended in the Conference Championship against the Dallas Cowboys.

Philadelphia Eagles Success

The following 1976 season, was filled with a litany of injuries for Jaworski and in March of 1977, he was traded by the Rams to the Philadelphia Eagles. However, the trade reunited Ron with one of his favorite coaches, former Rams quarterbacks coach turned Eagles head coach – Dick Vermeil.

The duo kicked off a period of success that the Eagles had not seen in nearly two decades. In 1978, Jaworski led the Eagles to the franchise’s first postseason appearance in 18 years. In the final seconds of the game, down by one point, Jaworski led the Eagles to the 16-yard line. But kicker Mike Michel missed the potentially game-winning field goal, and the Eagles lost 14-13.

In 1979, Jaworski and the Eagles saw further success, advancing to the divisional round of the playoffs before losing to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Then in 1980, Ron had one of his best NFL seasons earning NFC Offensive Player of the Year, a selection to the Pro Bowl, and finishing 3rd in AP NFL MVP voting. After a comeback victory against the Minnesota Vikings, the Eagles beat the rival Dallas Cowboys in the NFC Championship Game and advanced to their first Super Bowl in franchise history. Sadly, the game did not go the Eagles way. Ron struggled during the game, throwing 3 interceptions and losing a fumble. In the end, the Eagles lost 27-10 to the Oakland Raiders.

1980s Team Struggles

The Eagles returned to their fourth consecutive playoffs in 1981 but lost to the New York Giants in the Wild Card game. Then 1982’s strike-shortened season resulted in the Eagles missing the playoffs for the first time since 1978. Following the season, Eagles head coach Dick Vermeil retired and was replaced by defensive coordinator Marion Campbell.

The consecutive seasons were a continued struggle, which included a broken left leg for Jaworski in 1984 that ended his streak of 116 consecutive starts, an NFL record for quarterbacks that was not broken until 1999 by Packers quarterback Brett Favre. Despite the injury, Jaworksi continued to set records. In Week 10 of the 1985 season, he tied an NFL record with a game-winning, 99-yard touchdown pass in overtime to Mike Quick.

Franchise Record Holder

Then in 1986, multiple injuries to Jaworski allowed 1985 second-round pick Randall Cunningham to become the Eagles’ starter. Jaworski became a free agent at the end of the year, leaving the Eagles as the franchise record holder for quarterback wins, passing yards, pass completions, pass attempts, and passing touchdowns. While these records were eventually broken by Donovan McNabb, Jaworski still ranks second in each category today. He would also later earn induction into the Philadelphia Eagles Hall of Fame (1992), Philadelphia Sports Hall of Fame (2017), National Quarterback Club Hall of Fame (2022), and New Jersey Hall of Fame (2022).

After some time with the Miami Dolphins and Kansas City Chiefs, Ron retired and joined ESPN in 1990. Over the next 27 years, “Jaws” was a mainstay on ESPN, appearing on NFL Matchup, Sunday NFL Countdown, Monday Night Football, and as an NFL analyst on countless other shows. He is also the author of The Games That Changed the Gamewhich highlights the games that changed the strategies and tactics used in the NFL today. Since 2022, Ron has worked for NBC Sports Philadelphia as an analyst on Eagles Pregame Live and Eagles Postgame Live.
