As a true freshman at Penn State University, Saquon Barkley rushed for a Penn State freshman-record 1,076 yards. He was awarded second-team All-Big Ten honors and quickly became a college football star.
During his sophomore year, he continued to make history setting the Penn State sophomore record for rushing yardage at 1,496 yards.
After the regular season, Saquon was named the Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year, Big Ten Running Back of the Year, and First Team All-Big Ten.
In the 2017 Rose Bowl, he had 25 carries for 194 yards, averaging 7.8 yards per carry. After trailing 13–0, Penn State scored seven touchdowns on seven consecutive possessions. Barkley scored the first, fourth, and seventh touchdowns for Penn State. The team ultimately won the game vs the University of Southern California, 52–49.
Saquon continued his dominance in his junior year and in his final collegiate game rushed for 137 yards and two touchdowns, to give Penn State a 35–28 win over the Washington Huskies in the Fiesta Bowl.
Following Penn State’s Fiesta Bowl victory, he declared his intention to enter the 2018 NFL Draft. For his 2017 season, Saquon earned two Big Ten Special Teams Player of the Week honors, was a Consensus First-Team All-American, and again earned Big Ten Offensive Player of the Year and Big Ten Running Back of the Year awards while also adding Big Ten Return Specialist of the Year to his resume.
Following his three seasons at Penn State, Saquon held Penn State records for most career rushing touchdowns (43), most total yards in a single game (358 yards vs. Iowa), and became the first player to score a return touchdown and throw a passing touchdown in the same game.
After his career at Penn State and impressive testing at the NFL combine, NFL experts were calling Saquon a once-in-a-lifetime prospect. Ultimately, he went #2 overall to the New York Giants.
In his 2nd game, Saquon recorded 14 receptions, setting a Giants’ all-time franchise record for most catches in a game. He also tied the NFL single-game record for most catches in a game by an NFL rookie. Then in Week 14, in the Giants’ 40–16 win over the Redskins, he rushed for 170 yards and became the first Giants rookie to surpass 1,000 rushing yards in a season.
After his rookie season, Saquon led the league in rushing yards, led the league in scrimmage yards, and was third in touchdowns. In addition, he broke the following records:
Barkley received numerous awards after his rookie season, including Pepsi Rookie of the Year, FedEx Ground NFL Player of the Year, AP NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, an AP All-Rookie team nomination, and a spot in the Pro Bowl.
Barkley found similar success during his sophomore season and became the only running back in Giants’ history to have 1,000 rushing yards in their first two seasons. Unfortunately, during Week 2 of his third season, he tore his ACL, ending his 2020 season. This 2021 season was equally limited after Saquon suffered an ankle injury in Week 5 and was later placed in the NFL’s COVID-19 protocol.
However, fully healthy for the 2022 season, he finished with 1,650 total yards and 10 rushing touchdowns, finishing first in the NFC in rushing yards and earning his 2nd Pro Bowl. Then in the playoffs, his 109 scrimmage yards and two rushing touchdowns played a crucial role in the Giants’ 31–24 Wild Card Victory over the Minnesota Vikings – the Giants’ first playoff victory since 2011. The 2023 season was equally impressive for Saquon, totaling 1242 yards and 10 touchdowns in 14 games.
Despite his record-breaking success and interest in remaining a Giant for life, Saquon left the team for free agency after the team insisted that he prove his contract value on the open market. As a free agent, Saquon signed a three-year $37.75 million deal with the Philadelphia Eagles.
In his Eagles debut, Saquon rushed for 109 yards, two rushing touchdowns, and caught a receiving touchdown in a 34–29 victory over the Green Bay Packers, becoming the first Eagles player to score three touchdowns in their Eagles debut since Terrell Owens in 2004.
In Week 7, he returned to MetLife Stadium, rushing for 176 yards and a touchdown on 17 carries in a 28–3 victory over his former team. More viral than his performance was his insistence that other players get playing time in the blowout rather than going for a personal record.
Then in Week 9, Saquon recorded 199 scrimmage yards with two touchdowns, highlighted by the first-ever no-look, backward hurdle over a defender. In Week 12, he continued his dominance, recording 255 rushing yards and 302 total yards against the Los Angeles Rams. His 255 rushing yards were the ninth-most in a single game in NFL history and the most in Eagles history. His 302 scrimmage yards were also an Eagles record. Currently, he leads the league in both rushing and scrimmage yards while scoring the 2nd most touchdowns for a non-QB. He also has 4 NFC Offensive Player of the Week titles this season.
