Drew Bledsoe’s football journey began at Washington State University, where he quickly became the face of the Cougars’ offense after gaining the starting job as a true freshman. In 1992, he led WSU to a 9–3 record and a victory in the Copper Bowl, setting single-game and single-season records for passing yards and completions. He was also named the Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year. Following an impressive junior year, Bledsoe decided to forgo his senior season and enter the 1993 NFL Draft.
Bledsoe was the first overall selection in the 1993 NFL Draft by the New England Patriots. He started immediately, improving the Patriots’ record and, in 1994, led a remarkable comeback victory against the Minnesota Vikings, setting single-game records for pass completions (45) and attempts (70). This sparked a seven-game win streak, leading the Patriots to their first playoff appearance in eight years, and earned Bledsoe his first Pro Bowl selection.
In 1996, he helped lead the Patriots to an AFC Championship win over the Jacksonville Jaguars, securing an appearance in Super Bowl XXXI. He earned his second Pro Bowl invitation that season. During the 1997 season, Bledsoe achieved a career-high 87.7 passer rating, threw for 3,706 yards and 28 touchdowns, and earned his third Pro Bowl invitation. In 1998, he became the first NFL quarterback to complete game-winning touchdown passes in the final 30 seconds of two consecutive games, propelling New England into the postseason for the third straight year.
In 2001, Bledsoe signed a then-record 10-year, $103 million contract. Early in the 2001 season, he suffered a near-fatal injury from a hit by New York Jets linebacker Mo Lewis, leading to backup Tom Brady taking over as the starter. Although Brady became the permanent starter, Bledsoe played a crucial role in the Patriots’ playoff run, stepping in for an injured Brady in the AFC Championship Game against Pittsburgh. He led a scoring drive that contributed to the Patriots’24–17 victory, paving the way for their Super Bowl XXXVI win. For his significant contributions to the franchise, Bledsoe was inducted into the Patriots Hall of Fame in 2011.
After his tenure with the Patriots, Bledsoe was traded to the Buffalo Bills in 2002. He had one of his best seasons, passing for 4,359 yards and 24 touchdowns, earning his fourth trip to the Pro Bowl. In Week 2, he set a Bills team record with 463 passing yards in an overtime win against the Minnesota Vikings. After three seasons with the Bills, Bledsoe signed with the Dallas Cowboys in 2005, reuniting with former coach Bill Parcells, where he played for two more seasons.
Upon retiring from the NFL on April 11, 2007, Drew Bledsoe was 5th in NFL history in pass attempts and completions, seventh in passing yards, and thirteenth in touchdown passes. In 2007, he founded Bledsoe Family Winery with his wife, producing the highly acclaimed Doubleback wines. His dedication to making a positive impact extends to the Drew Bledsoe Foundation, which promotes “Parenting with Dignity,” a non-profit program encouraging responsible and independent behavior in children.
