Yvonne Cagle began working with NASA as a medical doctor in their Occupational Health Clinic. During her time at the NASA health clinic, she designed protocols for NASA remote duty operations. NASA then selected Yvonne Cagle for two years of astronaut training and evaluation in 1996.
Previously, she had been a commissioned Air Force medical officer in the United Kingdom.
