Biography

“May Day”

Mark May’s journey began in Oneonta, NY, where he was a three-sport standout and earned eight varsity letters. He went on to become one of the most dominant offensive linemen in college football history at the University of Pittsburgh. Nicknamed “May Day” for the havoc he wreaked on defensive lines, he anchored an elite offensive front, protecting Dan Marino and paving the way for Pitt’s 39–8–1 run from 1977–1980. In his final two seasons, he didn’t allow a single sack. He was awarded the Outland Trophy as the nation’s best interior lineman and was later inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame.

NFL Dominance & Super Bowl Glory

Selected 20th overall in the 1981 NFL Draft, May became a foundational piece of the Washington Redskins’ storied offensive line. As a member of the “Hogs,” he played in three Super Bowls, winning two, and helped define a decade of football excellence. Over a 13-year NFL career, he started 115 games, earned Pro Bowl honors, and became known for his tenacity, consistency, and leadership. He also played for the Chargers and Cardinals and remains one of Washington’s greatest players.

From the Trenches to the Studio

After retiring from the NFL, Mark May turned his attention to broadcasting. Over the next two decades, he became one of ESPN’s most recognizable voices in college football, appearing on College Football Final, College Football Live, and NFL Draft coverage. His thoughtful analysis, experience in championship culture, and dynamic on-air presence made him a fan favorite.

Off the Field

Known for his unselfishness and humility, Mark has given back to his alma mater and communities throughout his career. Whether selling cars in the offseason, authoring cookbooks with teammates, or mentoring young athletes, his life reflects a balance of grit, gratitude, and generosity.
