Julie Wainwright began her career at Clorox working in brand management and computer software before becoming CEO of Berkeley Systems. As CEO, she was instrumental in changing the company’s strategy and turning it into a leading interactive entertainment entity. However, when the company was sold to CUC in late 1996 she was replaced as CEO. This led Julie to her next role as president and CEO of Reel.com. Four months later, Hollywood Video purchased Reel.com in a deal valued around $100 million.
Then, Julie was asked to become CEO of Pets.com. While Pets.com met the fate of many other dotcom bubble startups, Julie was determined to learn as much as she could from the company’s failure.
In 2011, Julie founded The RealReal, an online marketplace for users to buy and sell authenticated luxury goods. With The RealReal, Julie revolutionized the way people buy and sell high-end products across all categories. Additionally, the company is a pioneer in sustainability efforts in the luxury space. In fact, The RealReal is the first luxury member of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation’s CE100 USA and the first resale member of the UN Climate Change’s Fashion Industry Charter for Climate Action.
In 2019, Julie took the company public, making her the 23rd woman in history to found and lead a company to an IPO. Finally, After 11 years working as the company’s CEO, Julie stepped down in 2022 to pursue other endeavors in business and keynote speaking.
Following her time at The RealReal, Julie co-founded Ahara, a personalized nutrition company, in 2022 with longtime friend Dr. Melina Jampolis. As a patient, Julie realized that Dr. Melina’s proven, food-first nutritional philosophy could create better health outcomes for many more people.
