David Blaine rose to prominence after the release of his first television special, David Blaine: Street Magic. Blaine was just twenty- three when Street Magic first aired on ABC, transforming televised magic by turning the camera on the audience. Spectators at home could feel the visceral reaction of people being astonished. The New York Times declared that Blaine had “taken a craft that’s been around for hundreds of years and done something unique and fresh with it,” The New Yorker prominently stated “he saved magic,” and Penn Jillette of Penn and Teller referred to Street Magic as “the best TV magic special ever done.” David continued this brand of magic in his other specials Magic Man, Real or Magic, and Beyond Magic.
In 1999, Blaine performed his first live endurance stunt: “Buried Alive.” He entombed himself in an underground plastic box beneath a three-ton water tank for seven days with no food and little water. In fact, this was a feat even Houdini was unable to do in his lifetime. During the stunt, David generated more foot traffic than both the Empire State Building and Statue of Liberty combined.
In 2000, he followed with “Frozen in Time” in which he was frozen into a block of ice. After nearly 64 hours, he was cut free from the ice with chainsaws. Two years later, David upped the ante even further with “Vertigo.” During this stunt, he stood atop a 100-foot-tall pillar in Bryant Park for 36 hours without a safety net, then leaped into a stack of cardboard boxes on live television. Next came “Above the Below” in 2003 which involved Blaine living in a glass box suspended near the River Thames in London for 44 days without food.
Then in 2006, his “Drowned Alive” stunt involved one week submerged in a sphere-shaped aquarium at Lincoln Center, receiving air and food through tubes. In the dramatic finale, he attempted to break the world record for holding breath underwater, while simultaneously escaping heavy chains. Although he did not succeed in 2006, on April 30th, 2008, David appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Show, succeeded in holding his breath for 17 minutes and 4 seconds, and set a new Guinness world record. A little over a year later, he described his journey in his notable 2009 TEDMED talk, where he was one of only two speakers to receive a standing ovation.
“Electrified” saw Blaine on the receiving end of one million volts discharged at him continuously for 72 hours from seven Tesla coils atop a 22-foot high pillar. “Ascension,” Blaine’s last stunt to date, shattered YouTube Originals live viewership records with 770k concurrent views, making it the most watched YouTube Originals live stream when it launched. The stunt involved David rising to Class A airspace using balloons and parachuting down alone – all completely live.
In 2014, having revolutionized modern magic and mesmerized audiences worldwide for nearly 20 years, Blaine embarked on his first-ever live tour. It was his dream to put everything he worked for into one show. With a death-defying stunt and a series of jaw-dropping magic effects, he marked his Middle East debut with a show at Abu Dhabi’s Emirates Palace.
Then in 2017, David launched his first-ever North American tour. An experiment itself, the tour evolved as it moved across the country as David continued to push the limits and attempt new feats for the first time live in front of his audiences. Following his North American run, he announced his first-ever tour of the UK and Ireland in 2019.
Today, David holds a residency in the Encore Theater at Wynn Las Vegas for his show “Impossible.”
