Becky Hammon’s journey began in Rapid City, South Dakota, where her high school records and Gatorade Player of the Year honors weren’t enough to catch the eye of major college programs. Told she was too small and slow, Colorado State took a chance on her—and she repaid them by becoming the most decorated player in school history. A three-time All-American, Hammon shattered conference records (even passing 11-year NBA veteran Keith Van Horn as the leading scorer, male or female, in Western Athletic Conference history), led CSU to the Sweet 16, and had her jersey eventually retired by the school.
Undrafted in 1999, Hammon signed a training camp contract with the New York Liberty, beginning a 16-year professional career defined by her scoring prowess, leadership, and clutch performances. Nicknamed “Big Shot Becky,” she was a six-time All-Star, led the league in assists, and became the 7th player in WNBA history to score over 5,000 points. After being told she would not be invited to try out for the U.S. team, Becky also represented Russia, where she played during the WNBA offseason, in the 2008 and 2012 Olympics, winning a bronze medal in Beijing.
After retiring in 2014, Hammon was hired by the San Antonio Spurs—becoming the first woman to serve as a full-time, paid assistant coach in NBA history. In 2020, she became the first woman to act as an NBA head coach after Gregg Popovich’s ejection. Hammon also led the Spurs to a Summer League Championship in 2015, quickly earning respect across the league for her basketball IQ, poise, and vision.
In 2022, Hammon returned to the WNBA as the head coach of the Las Vegas Aces. Her impact was immediate—she won Coach of the Year in her debut season and led the Aces to back-to-back championships in 2022 and 2023, becoming the first rookie head coach in WNBA history to win a title and the first to repeat in two decades.
In 2023, Hammon was inducted into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, cementing her legacy as one of the sport’s greatest and most influential figures.
