Inspired by her mother’s skills in the kitchen and captivated Julia Child, Anne Burrell discovered her love for cooking at an early age. After earning a degree in English and Communications from Canisius College in Buffalo, she pursued her true passion by enrolling in the prestigious Culinary Institute of America. After she graduated in 1996, Anne’s hunger for culinary knowledge took her to Italy, where she spent a year at the Italian Culinary Institute for Foreigners, immersing herself in authentic Italian cuisine.
Anne’s time in Italy was transformative. She honed her skills at La Taverna del Lupo in Umbria and the Michelin-starred La Bottega del ‘30 in Tuscany, a tiny 30-seat restaurant offering a six-course meal each night. These experiences shaped her cooking philosophy—celebrating simple, high-quality ingredients with bold flavors—a passion that still defines her approach to food today.
Upon returning to the U.S., Anne quickly made her mark on the New York City restaurant scene. She worked as a sous chef at Lidia Bastianich’s renowned Felidia Ristorante, followed by a role at Savoy Restaurant in Soho, where she mastered Mediterranean-inspired, wood-fired cooking. Her reputation as a talented and creative chef led her to teach at the Institute of Culinary Education for more than three years, where she shared her expertise with aspiring chefs.
Anne later returned to restaurant life, taking on the role of Executive Chef at Lumi Restaurant before moving to Italian Wine Merchants. It was during this time that Anne stepped into the spotlight after Mario Batali asked her to serve as one of his sous chefs for a pilot taping of Food Network’s Iron Chef America series. She continued to serve as his sous chef during his tenure with the show.
From there, she became the Executive Chef at Centro Vinoteca, a New York hotspot. It wasn’t long before she was offered her own show, Secrets of a Restaurant Chef, which ran for nine seasons and was nominated for two Daytime Emmy Awards.
Anne has since become a staple on Food Network, appearing on Chopped, Beat Bobby Flay, Chef Wanted, Worst Cooks in America, Food Network Star, and more. She has authored two cookbooks, Cook Like a Rock Star—a New York Times top-ten bestseller—and Own Your Kitchen, which both help home cooks build confidence in their kitchens.
Anne’s influence extends beyond the kitchen. She serves on the Garden of Dreams Foundation Advisory Board, brightening the lives of children facing adversity, and is a Celebrity Ambassador for the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. She also travels the country as a sought-after mentor and guest speaker, sharing her journey, love for cooking, and insights into the restaurant industry.
Anne has always said, “I feel so lucky to be able to share my true passion in life with others.” Whether she’s teaching, mentoring, or entertaining, Anne’s passion, charisma, and expertise continue to inspire aspiring chefs and food lovers everywhere.

In this follow-up to her spectacular bestselling debut Cook Like a Rock Star, Food Network chef and host Anne Burrell shows you not just how to keep rocking in the kitchen, but how to cook like you own it with 100 recipes to get you comfortable with dozens of essential techniques.
Taking control in the kitchen means mastering flavors and constantly keeping an eye on what Anne calls "QC" (quality control). It starts with learning the power of great ingredients (how quality olive oil and salt can transform an everyday dish), understanding the tools in your kitchen, and getting your mise en place ready before diving into a recipe. Anne shows you how to apply these skills to a slew of delicious, high-brow/low-stress recipes that get you out of a cooking rut, so you can keep surprising yourself in the kitchen. POC (piece of cake)!
Each dish—whether firsts, seconds, sides, brunch, sandwiches or desserts—is accessible yet teaches a range of techniques and embraces tantalizing flavors. And they all share Anne’s secrets to great home cooking.
Here is Anne at her most personal—complete with her enthusiastic, sassy approach to how to get the most out of ingredients and whip up irresistibly delicious dishes that she likes to cook at home. So cook these recipes, master them, and then you will OWN YOUR KITCHEN!
If chefs are the new rock stars, Anne wants you to rock in your own kitchen!
For Anne Burrell, a classically trained chef and host of Food Network’s Secrets of a Restaurant Chef (where she shares impressive recipes and smart techniques that anyone can master), and Worst Cooks in America (the show that transforms hopeless home cooks), being a rock star in the kitchen means having the confidence and ability to get a great meal on the table without a sweat. In her debut cookbook, she presents 125 rustic yet elegant recipes, all based on accessible ingredients, along with encouraging notes and handy professional tricks that will help you cook more efficiently at home.
With Anne's guidance, even the novice cook can turn out showstoppers like Whole Roasted Fish or Rack of Lamb Crusted with Black Olives, which are special enough for guests but easy enough for a weekday evening. For Piccolini (Little Nibbles), try making Truffled Deviled Eggs, Sausage and Pancetta Stuffed Mushrooms, or Baked Ricotta with Rosemary and Lemon. Delicious first courses include Pumpkin Soup with Allspice Whipped Cream and Garlic Steamed Mussels with Pimentón Aioli. And if you're craving pasta, Chef Anne's Light-as-a-Cloud Gnocchi, Sweet and Spicy Sausage Ragù, or Killer Mac and Cheese with Bacon will blow you away.
Organized from “Piccolini and Firsts” to “Pasta, Seconds, Sides,” and, of course, “Dessert” Cook Like a Rock Star is all about empowering you with the confidence to own what you do in your kitchen, to be excited by what you're making, and to experience the same kind of joy that Anne feels everyday when she cooks and eats.
