Perspective is simply this: how we view things
drives how we do things. The way we see something
has an incredible impact on the way we respond to it.
Perspective is the only thing in the world that can radically transform the results
you get without altering a single element
of your environment.
Most businesses
start their business as an opportunity to get rich.
It’s a get-rich-quick scheme.
The owner starts it, and they want to get rich.
And if they’re going to get rich, they’re going to get rich off of people, right?
They’re going to get rich off of customers.
They’re going to get rich off of employees.
They’re going to get rich off of communities.
They’re going to get rich off of suppliers. It started as a get-rich scheme.
I’m going to enrich my life at the expense of yours.
Remarkable businesses look at the same opportunity but at a
180-degree different premise. Remarkable businesses think of business
as an opportunity to be rich.
See, on the surface, it sounds almost identical,
but getting rich and being rich are polar opposites.
Getting rich and being rich, 180 degree different.
Getting rich is me getting rich at the expense of you.
Being rich is about using what I have to enrich the lives of other
people.
Businesses don’t succeed or fail.
People do.
Organizations don’t succeed or fail.
People do. So if you want to have a successful business or
successful organization, it starts by
creating the organization that can attract and
retain and develop successful people.
I feel like culture is the ultimate competitive advantage.
They can copy, you can reverse engineer products in a lab
somewhere or a factory somewhere, but you can’t reverse engineer a
culture. And I’ve often told people, if I had to leave Chick-fil-A, could only take
one thing with me, and it had to be successful, it wouldn’t be the amazing
sandwich, it wouldn’t be the amazing corporate headquarters, it wouldn’t be the
restaurants, it would be the culture, and I’m convinced I could replant that
culture in other businesses and be imminently successful.
What if we made it our goal to improve the story
for those we do business with? What might that look like?
How might that change the way we do things if that’s the way we viewed what we
were doing? Our goal is not to get your next 30 cents.
Our goal is to improve the story for those we do business with.
When we use the words be remarkable, we think in terms of marking
the lives of the people we serve. And at the end of the day, we want
to have done something worth remarking about.
