Biography

Make a Positive Difference

With a father who worked for the UN, Tobias Ellwood grew up in Germany, Austria, Britain, and has visited almost 100 countries across the globe. Born in New York, he also holds dual UK/US nationality. However, more impactful than his global upbringing, were his family of teachers who taught him how to think – not what to think.

Throughout his life, Tobias sought to make a positive difference and challenge the status quo. During his time in Parliament, he gained a reputation for having the courage to speak out and challenge Party positions especially when they went against the nation’s interest. Now as a keynote speaker, he regularly encourages audiences to play a greater leadership role, as our world enters a dark and ever more complex chapter.

Before Government Service

Before being elected to Parliament, Tobias spent six years as an officer in the British Army’s Royal Green Jackets. Today, he holds the rank of Lieutenant Colonel as a reservist in the 77th Brigade. After leaving the Army, he completed his MBA at City University Business School. He then worked as a Senior Business Development Manager with the London Stock Exchange and subsequently for the law firm Allen and Overy in a senior role. He also completed the senior executive course in National and International Studies at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government.

British Parliament

Eventually, he was elected as a Member of Parliament for Bournemouth East in the 2005 general election. During his 19-year career in Parliament, Tobias has served as Shadow Minister for Culture, Media, and Sport, Parliamentary Private Secretary to the Defence Secretary, Under Secretary of State at the Foreign Office with responsibility for the Middle East and Africa, Under-Secretary of State for Defence Veterans, Reserves and Personnel, and Chair of the Defence Select Committee.

Over the years, Tobias’s engagements have ranged from private tea with Vladimir Putin, where he observed the inner workings of Russian diplomacy, to working closely with U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry on critical Middle East policy initiatives.

As an MP, Tobias also pioneered the concept of social action within the Party. The idea of raising funds and rallying MPs and volunteers around an identified community project is now well established because of Tobias. He regularly leads work both in the UK and abroad, previously joining projects in Bosnia and Bangladesh.
