From Small-Town Dreamer to Big-League Star
Sean Casey’s journey to Major League Baseball wasn’t easy. Undrafted out of high school, he wrote letters to nearly 30 colleges before earning a single scholarship offer from the University of Richmond. He took full advantage of that opportunity, becoming a collegiate star and the first player in Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) history to win the Triple Crown (lead in batting average, home runs, and runs batted in). His .461 batting average in 1995 led all of Division I baseball, and that same year, the Cleveland Indians selected him in the second round of the draft.
Cincinnati’s Favorite Player
After a brief stint with the Indians, Casey found his true baseball home in Cincinnati. Over eight seasons with the Reds (1998-2005), he became one of the most beloved players in franchise history. A three-time All-Star, Casey was known for his clutch hitting, smooth glove at first base, and unparalleled ability to connect with teammates, fans, and even opposing players. He played for the Pittsburgh Pirates, Detroit Tigers, and Boston Red Sox following his tenure with the Reds, but his heart always remained in Cincinnati. In 2012, his impact on and off the field was cemented with his induction into the Cincinnati Reds Hall of Fame.
