Premier AI Researcher

Regina Barzilay’s work at the intersection of artificial intelligence and medicine has been shaped by both scientific research and personal experience. Originally focused on natural language processing, she redirected much of her research toward oncology following her breast cancer diagnosis in 2014.

Working alongside physicians and researchers, Barzilay began developing machine learning models capable of analyzing medical images, clinical notes, and patient data to improve cancer risk assessment and early detection.

Her collaboration with Dr. Connie Lehman at Massachusetts General Hospital led to the development of Mirai, an AI system designed to predict breast cancer risk up to five years in advance using deep learning. Her research and personal experience were featured in the FRONTLINE documentary In the Age of AI, which examined the broader impact of artificial intelligence on society.

Today, Barzilay’s clinical AI research extends across the patient experience, from early diagnosis through treatment and follow-up care. Her work explores applications for cancer, blood diseases, organ transplants, and diabetes, with an emphasis on making AI predictions reliable, addressing bias, and developing tools physicians can use in clinical practice.

Advancing AI in Drug Discovery and Healthcare

As the School of Engineering Distinguished Professor for AI and Health at MIT and AI Faculty Lead at MIT Jameel Clinic, Barzilay works at the intersection of computer science, chemistry, biology, and medicine.

Her research group develops machine learning methods to model molecular interactions, design new biomolecules, and improve the drug discovery process. Through collaborations with chemical engineers, biologists, and pharmaceutical researchers, her work addresses challenges in predicting molecular properties, understanding protein interactions, and identifying potential new medicines.

In 2020, Barzilay was part of an MIT research team that announced the discovery of halicin, an antibiotic compound identified through deep learning. The research demonstrated the potential of AI to support the search for new antibiotics and address antimicrobial resistance.

Barzilay’s contributions have earned recognition across artificial intelligence, engineering, and medicine. She received the MacArthur Fellowship in 2017, the AAAI Squirrel AI Award for Artificial Intelligence for the Benefit of Humanity, and the IEEE Frances E. Allen Medal in 2025. She was also named to the 2025 TIME100 AI list.

A member of the National Academy of Engineering, National Academy of Medicine, and American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Barzilay continues to advance research exploring how machine learning can improve medical care and accelerate scientific discovery.
