After scoring 1,001 points for Temple University, leading the team in scoring and rebounding both seasons, earning 1997 Atlantic 10 Conference Player of the Year, and bringing the Owls to the NCAA Tournament 2 years in a row, The Golden State Warriors drafted Marc Jackson with the 37th overall pick of the 1997 NBA draft.
Since he fell to the second round, Jackson chose to begin his pro career in Europe to better support his mother and younger brother as well as further develop his skills before entering the NBA. He spent three years overseas before returning to the NBA and debuting for the Warriors in 2000.
Jackson made an immediate impact for the Warriors, leading all rookies in points and rebounds. He was named to the All-Rookie team and finished third in Rookie of the Year voting.
As a restricted free agent at the end of the season, Jackson signed a six-year, $24.375 million offer sheet with the Houston Rockets. However, since he was a restricted free agent, the Warriors were able to match the Rockets’ offer and retain Marc.
Then at the 2002 NBA trade deadline, the Warriors traded Marc to the Minnesota Timberwolves, to play alongside Kevin Garnett.
A year later, he was traded to his hometown Philadelphia 76ers in a four-team deal. He missed 57 games due to injury his first season in Philadelphia, but bounced back the next year to help the Sixers return to the playoffs in the 2004-2005 season as the team’s third-highest point scorer. Marc’s time in Philadelphia represents some of the best years of his career.
He would play for the New Jersey Nets and New Orleans Hornets over the next two seasons before playing 2 more additional seasons overseas in Greece and Russia. Eventually, Marc retired from basketball in 2009. At the end of his career, Marc finished with 3,238 points, 1,655 rebounds, and 311 assists in the NBA.
Following his playing days, he embarked on a broadcast career. In 2010 when he was named to Comcast SportsNet pre and post-game Sixers shows. He continues that role today with NBC Sports Philadelphia. Additionally, he served as a college basketball color analyst for CBS Sports in 2018-19, filling in for John Baum as an analyst on Temple’s men’s basketball radio broadcasts.
Marc Jackson also loves speaking with audiences about his playing days, behind-the-scenes stories from the NBA, today’s league, and the 76ers, and everything in between. He is a great choice for Philadelphia organizations looking for a sports-focused fireside chat.
