A Trailblazing Quarterback
Kordell Stewart grew up in Marrero, Louisiana, with a dream bigger than his surroundings. Playing at local parks and developing under high school coach Billy North, Stewart transitioned from cornerback to quarterback, an early sign of the versatility that would define his career. As a senior at John Ehret High School, he accounted for 40 touchdowns and led his team to the state playoffs, drawing national attention.
That grit and determination earned him a scholarship to the University of Colorado, where he shattered records and delivered one of the most iconic moments in college football history: a game-winning, 64-yard Hail Mary against Michigan, forever known as The Miracle at Michigan.
By the end of his college career, Stewart had amassed over 7,700 yards of total offense and led the Buffaloes to multiple top-10 finishes and bowl victories. In 2018, Kordell was inducted into Colorado’s Athletic Hall of Fame.
NFL Stardom
Drafted by the Pittsburgh Steelers in the second round of the 1995 NFL Draft, Stewart’s rare athleticism allowed him to line up at multiple positions, a new archetype for the modern NFL. He quickly became a fan favorite known as “Slash,” a nickname coined by legendary broadcaster Myron Cope.
As the Steelers’ full-time starting quarterback by 1997, Stewart led the team to multiple AFC Championship appearances, racking up over 14,700 passing yards, nearly 2,900 rushing yards, 38 rushing touchdowns, and a Pro Bowl nod across his 11-year NFL career. He ranks among the top five quarterbacks in NFL history for career rushing touchdowns.
Despite early skepticism about whether he could succeed as a quarterback in the NFL, Stewart’s electrifying play-style and leadership paved the way for the next generation of dual-threat quarterbacks.
A Legacy of Resilience
More than stats or nicknames, Stewart’s legacy lies in his relentless pursuit of greatness and his ability to bounce back from adversity. From playoff heartbreaks to comeback seasons, Stewart consistently defied the odds, showing what’s possible when talent meets grit.
Today, Kordell brings those lessons to his speaking engagements, offering powerful insights on leadership, perseverance, adaptability, and redefining what success looks like when the world says “you can’t.”
