Surprisingly, Rice did not start playing football until he was a sophomore in high school. No major college football program recruited him either. He attended Mississippi Valley State University. As a senior, he broke NCAA records for receptions, yards and touchdowns and acquired the nickname “World” because there wasn’t a ball in the world he couldn’t catch.
After declaring for the 1985 NFL Draft, the San Francisco 49ers selected Rice with the 16th overall pick. It didn’t take long for that decision to pay off. In his second season, Rice caught 86 passes for a league-leading 1,570 yards and 15 touchdown catches. It marked the first of 11 straight 1,000-yard seasons for Rice. The following year, Rice set an NFL record 22 receiving touchdowns. He led the NFL in receiving yards six times including a NFL record 1,848 yards in 1995. Rice also led the NFL in touchdown receptions six times.
Rice went on to win three Super Bowls with the San Francisco 49ers and make a Super Bowl appearance with the Oakland Raiders. During his career, Rice made the Pro Bowl a record 13 times, won the NFL Most Valuable Player Award in 1987 and was Super Bowl MVP in Super Bowl XXIII with the 49ers. No wide receiver in NFL history played more than Rice’s 20 seasons. After retiring, Rice became a first-ballot Hall of Famer, the mark of a truly special football player.
Rice is a member of the NFL’s 1980s All-Decade Team, 1990s All-Decade Team, and the NFL’s 75th Anniversary All-Time Team.
