Biography
From Bartender to Humanitarian Founder
Doc Hendley began his journey in an unexpected place, bartending while searching for direction. Inspired by the desire to be part of something bigger, he raised funds through wine events and traveled to Darfur, Sudan, where he began installing water systems for victims of government supported genocide. In 2004, he formally launched Wine To Water, turning a grassroots idea into a global nonprofit.
Building a Global Clean Water Movement
Under Doc’s leadership, Wine To Water has developed a community based model that delivers water, sanitation, and hygiene solutions in partnership with local leaders. The organization has helped nearly 2 million people across more than 50 countries by digging, repairing, and sanitizing wells while advancing environmental sustainability, education, women’s empowerment, healthcare, and economic growth.
For his work, Doc was named one of the Top 10 CNN Heroes in 2009, selected from over 9,000 applicants by a panel that included General Colin Powell, Whoopi Goldberg, Ted Turner, and Sir Elton John. He is also the author of Wine to Water: A Bartender’s Quest to Bring Clean Water to the World, which is used in university courses across the country.
