Biography

The Pinnacle of Motorsport

Born in Twynholm, Scotland, David Coulthard began racing at age 11. He quickly rose through the motorsport ranks—earning the first McLaren Autosport Young Driver of the Year Award (1989) and winning the prestigious Macau Grand Prix—before making his Formula 1 debut with Williams in 1994. A year later, he secured his first Grand Prix victory in Portugal.

Nine Seasons with McLaren

David joined McLaren in 1996 and raced alongside Mika Häkkinen and later Kimi Räikkönen in one of the sport’s most iconic lineups. Over nine seasons, he claimed 12 Grand Prix wins and finished in the top 3 in the World Championship five times. Twice a winner of both the Monaco and British Grands Prix, David became one of the most consistent and respected drivers on the grid.

Red Bull Racing & Cementing a Legacy

In 2005, Coulthard joined the newly formed Red Bull Racing and helped shape the team’s competitive foundation. He secured their first-ever podium at Monaco in 2006, laying the groundwork for Red Bull’s eventual dominance. When he retired in 2008, David had amassed 13 wins, 62 podiums, and 535 career points—the most by any United Kingdom driver in F1 history at the time.

Life After the Checkered Flag

Since retiring from racing, David has remained a central figure in Formula 1. He is the lead commentator for Channel 4’s F1 coverage in the UK, conducts podium interviews for the global F1 broadcast, and regularly pilots Red Bull F1 cars in live demonstrations around the world. He’s also the co-founder of Whisper, one of Europe’s fastest-growing media production companies, and Velocity Experience, a corporate events firm. Additionally, in 2022, he co-founded More Than Equal, a pioneering initiative aimed at helping the first woman race in Formula 1’s modern era. Lastly, he serves as President of the British Racing Drivers’ Club, which owns and operates Silverstone Circuit in the UK.

Author, Podcaster, and Global Ambassador

David is the author of two acclaimed books—It Is What It Is, his autobiography, and The Winning Formula, a Sunday Times bestseller that examines what elite teams have in common. In 2023, he launched the Formula for Success podcast with fellow F1 veteran Eddie Jordan.

He often serves as an ambassador for global brands including Red Bull, IWC Schaffhausen, and UBS, and is a powerful advocate for safety and performance through Red Bull’s Wings for Life foundation.
