Biography

Leadership in Formula 1

Claire Williams OBE led the Williams Formula 1 racing team until 2020, becoming one of only two women in the modern era to head an F1 team. Under her leadership, Williams finished 3rd in the Constructors’ World Championship in 2014 and 2015—the team’s best performance since 2003.

Today, Claire serves as a global Brand Ambassador for green technologies company Fortescue Zero, formerly WAE Technologies. She is also one of the expert Formula 1 analysts featured in Netflix’s Drive to Survive documentary series through its 2024 and 2025 editions.

Her late father, Sir Frank Williams, founded the Williams Grand Prix Engineering F1 team, which went on to win nine Constructors’ Championships and seven Drivers’ Championships.

Education and Early Career

Claire graduated from Newcastle University in 1999 with a degree in Politics before starting her career as a Press Officer at Silverstone Circuit. In 2002, she joined Williams as a Communications Officer, later becoming Head of Communications and Head of Investor Relations. She was appointed Commercial Director in 2012.

When Frank Williams stepped down later that year, Claire became the Williams family representative on the company’s board. In March 2013, she was named Deputy Team Principal, effectively taking charge of the team’s day-to-day operations and long-term development. Sir Frank retained the Team Principal title in honor of his founding role and lifelong dedication to the team.

Achievements and Advocacy

Claire quickly established herself as one of the most prominent women in Formula 1 history. By her second and third years in charge, Williams Racing secured back-to-back third-place finishes in the Constructors’ Championship, followed by top-five results in 2016 and 2017.

She was also a strong advocate for diversity and inclusion, helping give Susie Wolff the opportunity to become the first female driver to participate in a Formula 1 race weekend since 1992.

Contributions Beyond Racing

As Vice President of the Spinal Injuries Association, Claire worked to create opportunities for people with spinal cord injuries, including integrating wheelchair users into the Williams Racing workplace. In April 2023, she launched the Sir Frank Williams Academy, a charitable initiative dedicated to providing life-changing care for those with spinal cord injuries, with support from Williams Racing.

Consultancy, Speaking, and Honors

Since overseeing the sale of Williams F1 in 2020, Claire has advised global brands entering the Formula 1 space and built a reputation as a sought-after corporate speaker, sharing insights on leadership and high-performance team culture.

In 2016, she was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honors List for her services to Formula 1.
