After setting 17 school records at the University of Maryland, the Cincinnati Bengals drafted Boomer Esiason in the 2nd round of the 1984 NFL draft. Despite going in the 2nd round, Boomer was actually the 1st quarterback taken in the draft. With the Bengals, Boomer notched 3 Pro Bowls, the 1988 NFL MVP, and led the team to Super Bowl XXIII. In 1986, Boomer threw for a Bengals-record 3,959 passing yards, a franchise record that stood for 20 years.
Before the 1993 season, Boomer was traded to his hometown team, the New York Jets. With the Jets, he would earn his 4th Pro Bowl nomination in 1993. Additionally, Boomer was named the 1995 Walter Payton Man of the Year for his charitable work. In only three seasons with the Jets, he became the team’s 4th-leading passer all-time (now 7th). Following his 3-year tenure with the Jets, Boomer signed with the Arizona Cardinals in 1996.
On the Cardinals, he threw for the 3rd most single-game passing yards in NFL history with 522 yards (now 5th). He played one more season with the Cincinnati Bengals before retiring at the end of the 1997 season. At the time of his retirement, he was top 10 in many of the NFL’s QB statistics. Today, he is still 19th all-time in touchdown passes with 247 and 18th all-time in passing yards. In fact, his 37,920 passing yards place him 1st all-time for left-handed QBs.
In 2023, the Bengals inducted Esiason into their Ring of Honor.
Since retiring, Boomer has become a well-known sportscaster. He commentated for ABC’s Monday Night Football during the 1998 and 1999 seasons with legendary announcer Al Michaels. Today, he is an in-studio analyst for The NFL Today on CBS, Inside the NFL on Showtime, and hosts Boomer and Gio on WFAN Radio in New York and the CBS Sports Network.
Boomer also started The Boomer Esiason Foundation after his son Gunnar was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. Its mission is to provide a higher quality of life for people with cystic fibrosis. The foundation also provides scholarships, transplant grants, hospital grants, and promotes education and awareness for people with cystic fibrosis. To date, it has raised over $150 million for the fight against cystic fibrosis.
