Biography

A Data Driven Approach to Human Behavior

Blake Eastman has dedicated his career to studying psychology, nonverbal behavior, communication, and performance. He is the founder of The Nonverbal Group, a behavioral research and education company that conducts large scale studies on human behavior and develops systems for improving communication.

In 2009, Blake conducted his first formal behavioral study by recording a series of blind dates from multiple camera angles. The footage allowed him to identify moments when participants appeared offended, attracted, bored, challenged, or engaged. This process became the foundation for The Nonverbal Group’s research methodology.

The company has since conducted hundreds of workshops for participants ranging from corporate employees and executives to military members and FBI Counterterrorism agents. Its work focuses on interpreting the behavior of others, understanding how personal behavior is perceived, and identifying the psychological and social mechanisms that influence communication.

Blake also founded Behavior Robotics in 2019. Its technology tracks facial movements, blinks, and gaze direction in real time. He continues to explore how machine learning, natural language processing, and behavioral data can improve the way organizations study communication, audience response, and human performance.

Psychology Background

Before launching his companies, Blake served as an adjunct psychology professor at the City University of New York for six years. During that time, he taught General Psychology, Developmental Psychology, and Group Dynamics. His academic background is rooted in forensic psychology, with an emphasis on psychological testing.

While studying experimental psychology, he recognized that observation alone could not confirm whether an interpretation was accurate. That realization led him to begin recording interactions, reviewing the footage, and creating systematic methods for analyzing behavior.

Poker, Performance, and Practical Communication

Poker has played a central role in Blake’s life. He played cash games professionally and founded School of Cards, the first brick and mortar poker school in the country. He taught several thousand players, ranging from beginners learning the fundamentals to experienced competitors developing strategies for demanding games.

Blake later led Project BEYOND TELLS, the largest behavioral study ever conducted on poker players. The seven year project involved recording, tagging, and analyzing thousands of hours of video. Blake and his team manually coded more than 550,000 blinks, 25,000 hand gestures, and other behavioral signals. But most importantly, the study proved that most of the body language advice we’ve held as fact is wrong.
