From Prison to World Champion
Bernard Hopkins grew up in Philadelphia as one of eight siblings. His early life took a difficult turn. By seventeen, he had been sentenced to 18 years in prison for nine felonies. While incarcerated, Hopkins rediscovered his passion for boxing. After serving almost five years, he was released in 1988 and committed himself to using boxing as an escape from his previous life.
That same year, Hopkins entered the professional ranks. After losing his debut, he returned following a sixteen-month layoff and began building his career as a middleweight. Between February 1990 and December 1992, he recorded 21 wins without a loss, including 16 by knockout.
Hopkins became a world champion in 1995, winning the vacant IBF middleweight title. He went on to compile 20 defenses against 17 opponents. In 2001, he defeated Félix Trinidad to unify the middleweight division and become undisputed middleweight champion. In 2004, his victory over Oscar De La Hoya added the WBO title and made Hopkins the first male boxer to simultaneously hold world titles from all four major sanctioning bodies.
His accomplishments earned him recognition as The Ring and Boxing Writers Association of America Fighter of the Year in 2001.
Longevity, Adaptation & Boxing History
Hopkins’ success continued after moving up to light heavyweight. At 41, he defeated Antonio Tarver to win the IBO and The Ring light heavyweight titles. Years later, he defeated Jean Pascal to capture the WBC, lineal, and The Ring light heavyweight championships, becoming the oldest boxer in history at that time to win a major world title at 46.
He proceeded to break his own longevity record. Hopkins won the IBF light heavyweight title from Tavoris Cloud at 48, then defeated Beibut Shumenov at 49 to add the WBA Super title and become the oldest boxer in history to unify titles in a weight division.
Hopkins fought professionally until 2016, completing a 28-year career. Outside the ring, he became a minority partner with Golden Boy Promotions, continuing his involvement in boxing after his competitive career ended.
