Biography

From Hickory Street to Canton

Andre Reed grew up in Allentown, Pennsylvania, where he learned early that dreams only matter if you work for them. Despite being overlooked for his size, he walked into Kutztown University as an undersized quarterback and walked out as a record-breaking wide receiver (for 10 different school records). Drafted in the fourth round by the Buffalo Bills in 1985, Reed launched one of the most remarkable wide receiver careers in NFL history.

A Buffalo Bills Legend

Over 15 seasons with the Buffalo Bills and one final year with Washington, Reed became known as the king of yards after catch. His fearless route-running across the middle helped power the Bills to four straight Super Bowl appearances. Reed was selected to seven consecutive Pro Bowls and notched nearly every major receiving record in Buffalo’s storied history during his career.

He retired with 1,036 career receptions, 14,427 total yards, and 96 touchdowns. His chemistry with Hall of Fame quarterback Jim Kelly set the standard for receiver-quarterback duos, with a then-record 663 career completions between them. He still holds Buffalo’s career receiving yardage and receiving TD records as well as the franchise’s 5th and 6th best receiving yardage seasons ever.

Defining Toughness and Tenacity

Reed’s defining moment came in the greatest comeback in NFL history: the Bills’ 32-point rally over the Oilers in the 1993 playoffs. With 136 yards and three touchdowns in that game alone, Reed proved what teammates and coaches already knew…he thrived under pressure. As Coach John Madden once said about Andre, “One of Reed’s most noticeable attributes was his toughness, and that is what made him special.”

Hall of Fame Honors & Continued Impact

After eight years as a Hall of Fame finalist, Reed was finally inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2014. His enshrinement was more than a personal milestone; it was a win for his family, his community, and every underdog who dares to dream big.

Off the field, Reed continues to make an impact through the Andre Reed Foundation, whose mission is to help underprivileged children reach their full potential and become responsible contributors to their communities.
