Pioneering Regenerative Medicine
Dr. Doris Taylor has spent more than 30 years advancing regenerative medicine and tissue engineering. She is credited with the first functional scientific repair of an injured heart with stem cells in 1998. In 2008, her group developed a cell removal process known as decellularization, creating scaffold frameworks that could be used to build new organs with stem cells. The work was recognized as a “Top 10 Research Advance” by the American Heart Association, and Taylor was nominated as one of TIME magazine’s “100 most influential people in the world.”
Her research has led to dozens of scientific breakthroughs featured in journals including Nature Medicine, Circulation Research, The Journal of Molecular Biology, and JAMA. She has published close to 200 papers and holds more than 30 patents. Her work has also explored cellular signatures of heart disease and aging, including differences associated with age, sex, race, and ethnicity.
Dr. Taylor is a Fellow of the American Heart Association, American College of Cardiology, European Society of Cardiology, and American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering. She is also a senior member of the National Academy of Inventors and has served on scientific committees and think tanks for organizations including the NIH, FDA, American Association of Blood Banks, and Alliance for Regenerative Medicine.
