From Phi Slama Jama to NBA Stardom

Clyde Drexler emerged as a national basketball star at the University of Houston, where he helped lead the famed “Phi Slama Jama” teams to consecutive Final Four appearances. A first-team All-American and conference player of the year, he left college as one of the most accomplished players in program history.

Selected by the Portland Trail Blazers in the 1983 NBA Draft, Drexler quickly developed into one of the league’s premier players. His athletic style of play earned him the nickname “Clyde the Glide,” while his versatility made him one of the most complete guards of his era. Over the course of his career, he earned 10 NBA All-Star selections, five All-NBA honors, and led Portland to two NBA Finals appearances.

In 1992, Drexler helped lead the United States men’s basketball team, the legendary “Dream Team,” to an Olympic gold medal. Three years later, after joining the Houston Rockets, he captured an NBA championship alongside longtime friend Hakeem Olajuwon.

Drexler retired as one of only a handful of players in NBA history to reach 20,000 points, 6,000 rebounds, and 6,000 assists. His accomplishments earned him induction into the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame twice: first for his individual career and later as a member of the Dream Team.

Following his playing career, Drexler served as head coach at the University of Houston and has remained active in the game as a broadcaster, businessman, author, and basketball executive.
