Biography

Humble Beginnings in Pittsburgh

Aaron Donald’s journey began in Pittsburgh’s Lincoln–Lemington–Belmar neighborhood, where early mornings in a homemade basement gym taught him the value of discipline. Guided by his father’s commitment to structure and hard work, Donald transformed from a self-described lazy kid into one of the fiercest competitors football has ever seen.

Despite his dominant senior season at Penn Hills High School, Aaron entered college as a modest three-star recruit. He chose to stay home, joining the University of Pittsburgh.

Building a College Legacy

At the University of Pittsburgh, he became one of college football’s most feared defenders. As a senior, he posted a staggering 28.5 tackles for loss and 11 sacks, earning him unanimous All-American honors and a clean sweep of college football’s major defensive awards: the Lombardi, Nagurski, Bednarik, and Outland Trophies. In 2025, the University of Pittsburgh inducted Aaron into its Athletics Hall of Fame.

NFL Dominance

Drafted 13th overall by the St. Louis Rams in 2014, Aaron Donald wasted no time making an impact. He was named NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year and began a historic run of dominance, earning First-Team All-Pro honors in 8 of his 10 seasons and Pro Bowl honors in all 10 of his NFL seasons. He is one of only three players in NFL history to win Defensive Player of the Year three times (2017, 2018, 2020), joining the elite company of Lawrence Taylor and J.J. Watt.

Aaron finished his career with 111 sacks—the most ever by a defensive tackle. He also achieved 100 of those sacks in the shortest span for a defensive tackle in NFL history. Additionally, in 2018 Aaron led the league with 20.5 sacks, setting both the Rams’ single-season record and the all-time mark for a defensive tackle. Known for his ferocity, precision, and relentless work ethic, he was ranked No. 1 on the NFL Top 100 Players list twice.

A Champion on and off the Field

In Super Bowl LVI Aaron delivered the game-sealing play, securing his legacy, giving the Rams their first title in Los Angeles, and hoisting the Lombardi Trophy.

But Aaron’s impact didn’t stop at the sidelines. Through his AD99 Foundation, he has invested in under-resourced youth in Pittsburgh; and through partnerships with organizations like WalkUnited LA and Operation Progress, he’s helped lead efforts to combat homelessness and build stronger communities in Los Angeles.

Aaron officially retired in March of 2024, choosing to leave the game fulfilled, healthy, and on his own terms. Today, he inspires others by sharing lessons from his journey through fireside chats that explore leadership, resilience, and what it means to be elite.
