Biography

From All-American to NFL Standout

Ryan Shazier emerged as one of college football’s most accomplished defensive players during his time at The Ohio State University. After three standout seasons, he entered the 2014 NFL Draft, where the Pittsburgh Steelers selected him with the 15th overall pick.

Shazier quickly became a cornerstone of the Steelers defense. Across four seasons, he recorded 202 solo tackles, 97 assists, seven sacks, three fumble recoveries, and seven interceptions. His performance earned him two Pro Bowl selections and established him as one of the NFL’s premier linebackers.

A Story of Resilience and Purpose

In December 2017, Shazier suffered a spinal contusion during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals, an injury that ended his playing career and required spinal stabilization surgery. As he recovered, he faced the challenge of learning to walk again, demonstrating the perseverance and determination that would become central to his story.

After officially retiring from the NFL in 2020, Shazier dedicated himself to helping others facing similar challenges. He founded the Ryan Shazier Fund for Spinal Rehabilitation, which provides support, resources, and funding to spinal injury patients and their caregivers, helping them pursue greater independence regardless of socioeconomic circumstances.

In 2021, he published Walking Miracle, a book that chronicles his recovery from paralysis and the search for purpose that followed. He also hosts the podcast Don’t Call It A Comeback, where he continues conversations about resilience, growth, and overcoming obstacles. In 2020, Shazier completed his degree after returning to The Ohio State University, further demonstrating his commitment to personal growth and lifelong achievement.
