Biography

The New York Rangers selected Mike Richter with the 28th overall pick in the 1985 NHL Entry Draft. After representing the US in the 1986 World Junior Championships, 1986 World Championships, and the 1988 Winter Olympics, Richter made his NHL debut in the 1989 playoffs. During his first four seasons, Richter split goaltending duties with veteran starter John Vanbiesbrouck.

Mike Richter’s 1993-94 Season

The 1993-94 NHL season offered Richter his first chance as the team’s #1 goaltender after Vanbiesbrouck left the Rangers. He made the most of the opportunity, posting a career-best 42 wins and 2.57 goals against average and leading the Rangers to their 2nd Presidents’ Trophy in 3 years.

In the playoffs, Richter ramped up his play further becoming the 8th goaltender to post 4 shutouts in one playoff season. The Rangers, led by captain Mark Messier, fought their way to the 1994 Stanley Cup Finals. Against the Canucks, Richter made a career highlight in Game 4, famously stopping Vancouver sniper Pavel Bure on a penalty shot. Richter and the Rangers defeated the Canucks in 7 games to win their first Stanley Cup in 54 years.

Top of His Game

Over the following years, Richter consistently ranked among the world’s top goaltenders. He led the United States to victory in the 1996 World Cup of Hockey, earning Most Valuable Player honors. He was also selected as the USA’s top goalie for the 1998 and 2002 Olympics, winning a silver medal at the 2002 Games.

In 2003, a skull fracture and concussion forced Richter to retire, but not until after he became the first Ranger to record 300 wins. He finished his career as the Rangers’ all-time leader in wins, later surpassed by Henrik Lundqvist. On February 4, 2004, the Rangers retired Richter’s #35, making him the 3rd Ranger to have their number retired. Additionally, since 2014, the Mike Richter Award has been awarded to the best goaltender in Division I men’s ice hockey.
