Biography

From Quarterback to Coach

Kevin O’Connell’s football journey began behind center. After a standout collegiate career at San Diego State, where he captained the Aztecs and rewrote the record books, he was drafted by the New England Patriots in the third round of the 2008 NFL Draft—making him the earliest quarterback ever selected by Bill Belichick. He went on to play for several NFL teams, including the New York Jets, where he spent the longest stint of his career.

But even while wearing a helmet and pads, Kevin was quietly preparing for something more. During his playing days, he realized his deeper calling: coaching.

Super Bowl Champion

Kevin began his coaching career in 2015 and quickly rose through the ranks with coaching roles in Cleveland, San Francisco, Washington, and ultimately Los Angeles—where he served as offensive coordinator under Sean McVay and helped lead the Rams to a Super Bowl LVI victory. Just three days after hoisting the Lombardi Trophy, he was named head coach of the Minnesota Vikings.

Minnesota Vikings Success

In his first season, he led the team to a 13–4 record, an NFC North title, and the largest comeback in NFL history. His Vikings went 11–0 in one-score games, reflecting a team culture built on resilience, belief, and attention to the smallest details.

Even in seasons challenged by injuries and adversity, Coach O’Connell has emerged as one of the league’s most respected leaders. He capped the 2024 season with a 14–3 record, earned a contract extension, and was named the 2024 AP and PFWA NFL Coach of the Year.

A Leadership Philosophy That Works

Whether guiding his team through a 33-point comeback or helping a veteran quarterback find new life, Kevin O’Connell’s approach is consistent: sincere communication, relentless preparation, and uplifting those around him. His wife Leah describes it best: “He has always used every opportunity to get better, study the game, and improve his own abilities so that he could use that to encourage, motivate, and better those around him.”

Kevin brings that same outlook to every event—leading with heart, optimism, and tactical insight. He’s the kind of coach who makes everyone around him better.

Life Off the Field

Kevin and Leah O’Connell are parents to four children and are passionate supporters of pediatric cancer research. For the past three seasons, Kevin has honored children battling cancer by wearing custom cleats during the NFL’s My Cause My Cleats campaign, using his platform to bring awareness and drive impact.
