Biography

A Champion’s Journey

Drafted by the St. Louis Cardinals in 1971, Keith Hernandez worked through the minors to become an MLB star. In 1979, he won the National League MVP award, cementing his place as one of the game’s elite players. His leadership and clutch performances helped guide the Cardinals to a World Series title in 1982.

In 1983, Keith was traded to the New York Mets, a team that was struggling at the time. Rather than viewing it as a setback, he embraced the challenge, becoming the heart and soul of a young, hungry roster. His arrival marked the beginning of the Mets’ transformation into a powerhouse, culminating in their thrilling seven-game World Series victory in 1986.

Keith was not just an offensive and defensive force—he was a leader both on and off the field. Known for his sharp baseball IQ, people often described Keith as an extension of the manager on the field, mentoring younger players and setting a high standard of excellence. His clutch hitting and defensive prowess made him one of the most complete first basemen in the history of the sport. In 2022, Keith became the fourth Mets player in franchise history to have his number retired by the team.

Media Career

Beyond his playing days, Keith Hernandez has remained a central figure in baseball. After retiring from playing in 1990, Keith transitioned into broadcasting. As a longtime analyst for the New York Mets, he has won multiple Emmy Awards for his insightful, candid, and often humorous commentary. His ability to break down the game in a way that engages audiences has made him one of the most beloved broadcasters in the sport.

In addition to broadcasting, Keith is a bestselling author. His books offer a behind-the-scenes look at his storied career, his philosophies on leadership, and the lessons he’s learned from America’s pastime. His New York Times bestselling memoir, I’m Keith Hernandez, provides an in-depth look at his rise to stardom, while his baseball-focused works explore the game’s nuances from a player’s perspective.

Keith’s influence also extends to pop culture. He notably appeared in a legendary two-part episode of Seinfeld, where he played himself. His sense of humor and charismatic presence have made him a crossover figure who resonates with audiences beyond sports.

Charitable Endeavors

Keith is also passionate about giving back to the community. He has been involved in numerous charitable efforts, supporting organizations focused on Alzheimer’s research, children’s hospitals, and veteran assistance programs. His commitment to making a difference off the field is just as strong as it was on the field.
