The Police, Grammy Awards, and an Influential Guitar Career

Andy Summers established himself as one of rock music’s influential guitarists through his work with The Police. Before joining the band in 1977, he performed with several British groups, including Zoot Money’s Big Roll Band, Soft Machine, and the Animals. His distinctive approach to the guitar, combining minimalist arrangements with inventive effects, became a defining element of The Police’s internationally recognized sound.

During his time with the band, Summers earned two Grammy Awards for Best Rock Instrumental Performance, winning for Reggatta de Blanc in 1981 and Behind My Camel in 1982. The Police achieved international success with songs including Roxanne, Message in a Bottle, Every Breath You Take, and Don’t Stand So Close to Me.

Following his work with The Police, Summers continued recording and performing as a solo artist. His career includes collaborations with guitarist Robert Fripp on the albums I Advance Masked and Bewitched, along with an extensive catalog of solo recordings. His more recent instrumental albums include Metal Dog, Triboluminescence, and Harmonics of the Night.

Summers has also continued performing The Police’s music through new collaborations. In 2023, he returned to Brazil with Rodrigo Santos and Joao Barone as part of the trio Call the Police, which has played sold out performances in South America. His additional projects include recording Bring on the Night with the Italian guitar group Forty Fingers and releasing an instrumental interpretation of Roxanne.

Photography, Writing, and International Recognition

Alongside his musical accomplishments, Andy Summers has established a career in photography and literature. His 2006 autobiography, One Train Later, was voted the number one music book of the year in the UK. The memoir inspired the documentary film Can’t Stand Losing You, which received a theatrical release in the United States in 2015. In 2021, Rocket 88 Books published his collection of short stories, Fretted and Moaning.

Summers’ black and white photography has been exhibited internationally. His exhibition A Certain Strangeness broke attendance records at the Pavillion Populaire in Montpelier, France, before continuing to the Bonnafanten Museum in Maastricht, the Netherlands, for a six month run. His work has also appeared in Leica galleries in London, Hamburg, Munich, Paris, and New York, as well as Leica’s headquarters in Germany.

In 2017, Leica Camera and Fender Guitars collaborated on limited edition designs featuring a Leica M camera and an Andy Summers Signature Stratocaster. The guitar, renamed the Monocaster, incorporated Summers’ black and white photography into its design.

His achievements have earned recognition across music and the arts. In addition to his induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Summers is a member of the Guitar Player Hall of Fame, has received the keys to New York City, and was awarded the Chevalier de l’Ordre des Arts et des Lettres by the French Ministry of Culture.

Continuing to combine his interests in music and visual art, Summers developed the multimedia show The Cracked Lens and a Missing String, for which a United States and Canada tour was announced in 2023. His work across music, photography, and literature reflects a career of sustained creative exploration.
